A Moonbeam Children's Book Awards winner. Suggested for readers ages 10 to 13. Sara is thirteen and in the northern Michigan woods at Lakewood Dance Camp where she is excited, scared, and challenged by class auditions, rehearsals, and performances of authentic ballets. She just HAS to win one of the three scholarships for the next summer so she can continue her training or there's no chance of returning. She is determined to be a REAL dancer in a REAL company some day. But how can she look good enough to win a scholarship when she has to learn new forms of dance, try to figure out what Madame is saying with her Russian accent, dance all day long, and stay out of trouble? Robin keeps getting in her way, messing up rehearsals, blaming her for a sprained foot, and for problems with the boys across the lake. Even her new friend Erin seems more interested in having fun sometimes than taking their classes and rehearsals seriously. When dancers from The San Francisco Ballet make a visit and perform for the young dancers, Sara is even more inspired. Taking a master class with Yuri from the company is awesome and watching them perform "Swan Lake" is so romantic. But it could all be ruined by not keeping up in class, by getting caught looking into a secret practice room in the basement of the dance studio, or being caught off-limits on the boys' side of the lake in the mysterious cabin in the woods. Sara wants more than anything to sing the Lakewood song on stage after the final performance with a scholarship in hand, but she has trouble even making up a dance for the student concert where the boys will be the audience. If that isn't problem enough, she is paired with Robin for the final dance performance and they just can't get it together. Instead of making everything worse, Sara needs to find a way to bring teamwork and success. A glossary of dance and theater terms is included, along with a "What Do You Think?" discussion section at the end of the book.

Swanson uses her experience as both a dancer and a teacher to describe the dedication and heart it takes to become a ballerina. Mixing in teenage drama of boys, competition, and pettiness makes for a interesting story that has a sweet outcome. A terrific read for all those kids that watch "Dancing With the Stars" and "Dance Mom's" because they will learn that while dancing looks easy, it only comes with hard work. Nice lessons in teamwork, compassion and responsibility to each other.Product details

Summer Dance Lynn Swanson 9781463742164 Books Reviews
Summer Dance is a great read. It follows aspiring ballerinas to a summer dance program that shares it's location with a boys camp. When you mix ballet, boys and teenage drama it is always a great read! I highly recommend this book to pre-teens and teens!
This treasure of a novel takes young readers behind the scenes at a competitive dance camp where aspiring dancers are learning to deal with competition, friendship, and all of the hard work, dedication, and discipline that go into pursuing a life in dance. The novel also does a beautiful job of presenting a touching new romance between thirteen year old Sara and Hank, who attends a nearby boys' camp. The writing is beautiful and so evocative. You can smell the pines and see the deer and feel as though you're right there in the northern woods with Sara and her big heart and dreams. Having taught at Interlochen for several summers, this book particularly resonated with me. I loved it!
Lynn Slaughter, author of While I Danced
I eagerly anticipated Summer Dance as a sentimental revisit to my days spent at dance studios. What I discovered was something far more educational and inspirational.
Summer Dance is a charming young-adult novel that will entertain readers of all ages. What brings it far above that level is the obvious amount of research and care that was put into the creation of the story, making it a course in the study of dance with fiction as a very enthralling backdrop. As I followed the story of the growth of these young dancers, I was so enlightened to learn along with them by using the glossary of dance and theatre terms that inspired me to search out ballet performances and music on line so that I could see and hear what I was reading!
The dancers grow along with their acquired skills, envisioning new and better ways to learn with cooperation. It is possible to seek out success in a competitive environment without abandoning good character.
Summer Dance is a gem and not to be missed.
Sweet story that is well-written and will appeal to tween and teen dancers. My daughter begged for me to order the sequel as she neared the end of the book. Guess what we're doing this weekend? Auditioning for summer dance programs...
